Netflix just released an iOS update, just tested again with that same scene from lost in space and the stuttering is gone now

Edit: Spoke too soon, it’s still occurring

Having the same issue, but judder rarely happens when I enable low power mode. As soon as I turn low power mode off, judder appears.

I was watching Moving Art & it was bad on my MAX but great on my old X
Lets wait to see if next iOS update will solve this issue. Change to a brand new max doesn’t mean will solve this issue. Hopefully is the sw issue.

I ran Lost in Space simultaneously on my Max and 8 Plus. It was noticeably crisper and sharper on the 8 Plus. Almost as if compressed in the Max. Even The Office episodes appear more crisp on the 8 Plus. All within the Netflix app.

So we don't have any idea what's going on with our XS Max and we don't know if these are isolated cases or a general problem :(

Someone should reach out to a major tech magazine or news site. The more publicity it gets the faster the resolution (pun intended).

I totally agree with you. When I bought the XS max it is also for its HDR compatibility. Nothing on website as appleinsider or macrumor just an article about connectivity issue and one saying that xs and xs max screen is the best on the market OK but we have stuttering issue

So why did the regular X play HDR in YouTube?

YouTube has two different codecs, industry standard h.265 and their proprietary format vb9.

Videos up to 1080p are displayed in h.265 anything higher and it’s googles codec.

Apple doesn’t support googles proprietary codec in any capacity and google does not support the industry standard in formats higher than 1080p.

TLDR
It depends on the resolution your watching.

Yes I did it nothing changed for me :(

I haven’t tried it personally, developers are usually m’y slammed this time of year updating their apps and the App Store is also slammed reviewing major updates.

It will work, might take some time.

Honestly this is not as bad as when the iPhone 6plus or the x were introduced, that felt like torture waiting for apps to update to fully utilize the screen.

Meanwhile, I can tell you something more from my experience.

Definitely having heat. Not overheating, mind you, it's not so hot I can't hold it, but I can feel it sensibly get hotter in about half a minute, even when playing a simple, plain, 1080p YouTube video.

I'm going for the heat throttling issue, here: an hour ago, I tried to watch a 4K HDR video on nPlayer and it showed no stuttering, since the iPhone had just been picked up, so no high temperature at all.

Give it a couple of minutes to get warmer... and all the issues are back: on Netflix, on nPlayer, on plain, simple, 1080p non-HDR videos on YouTube.

Again, God forbid I'm wishful thinking, but... throttling could be solved via a software update, couldn't it?

Probably but the question is: are the Apple engineers aware of this problem? For now, I am not sure. Indeed, I talked with the Apple Assistance yesterday morning; no report for the moment.

I think the most important thing is to report the problem to Apple so that its engineers can work on it.

I think :)

I agree. Apple needs to be made aware and we need to be vocal so that this issue get traction’s with the tech blogs.

Well everyone with an Xs or Xs max is on iOS 12 so they can’t blame fragmentation.....here in the uk there’s no new update to Netflix either

There is. iOS App update was released today. I’m in the Middle East but, being British my App Store is tied to the UK. I don’t have it on my X but do on my IPP 10.5

The Netflix update didn’t help.
App updates won’ t help. It is a structural problem, that needs to be addressed by an IOS update.
People are experiencing the same slowdowns in iTunes movies, not just Netflix .

I totally agree with you. I hope that it is not an hardware issue because I don't think that all IPhone XS owners have this problem

I think they do have this problem, they have just not noticed it yet. Sometimes I can watch one episode without problems, after surfing the web, look at WhatsApp , mail, etc.
Not so extensive tasks.
But after a while, when the phone is getting warmer, it exhibits these slowdowns. I really think it is a power management or thermal throttling issue of some sort.

But I have had this iPhone for 5 days now, and when in a weeks time there is not some sort of acknowledgement of the problem by apple or statement about a software update that fixes things, it will be going back.

But I wonder why this hasn’ t made it to the front page of Mac rumors or another news site yet.

I have the same issue with HDR content and I came to this topic after searching about it from google. I have only noticed it in Netflix as I do not have HDR movies in itunes.

I did report the problem to Apple as suggested here and I was wondering if Apple responds to user feedback sent through the feedback form? If not, what is the right channel to get in touch with them.

Despite fears in this topic that it would be a hardware issue I am rather certain it will be fixed in software update.

In the begginig I was amused about reading other threads where they say "it just works" and this thread with this big problem where "it not works" but it seems that this problem might get nasty.
You (ios users) should pray this is not the case, cuz if it is, you just spent 1000-2000 EUR on a pice of ... heat:
It seems that the new iphones lacks a thermal cooling mechanism....
