Is it only Max users? I haven't read through the whole topic. If so maybe it has to do with the new resolution size and scaling issues. Just a thought...

Honestly this issue is more bothering than the slightly lower signal I receive from my Max. This big beautiful screen screams media consumption, but all 24fps content just looks awful with the stuttering.

Edit: 60fps looks fine though. I watch YTTV on it quite a bit and it looks perfect. Even non-HDR content that is streamed at 24fps looks pretty bad on this - The Office on Netflix as an example.

I had no problem streaming movie trailers on iTunes or watching standard res on Netflix. HDR downloaded movies from iTunes, however, are a different story. I’m a bit surprised more people aren’t complaining all over the internet. My guess is most people have not even tried watching HDR content. Or maybe only a handful of devices have the problem.

I can’t tell you how many people I’ve heard say they don’t watch movies on their iPhone.

I just downloads tag hdr on an iPhone X’s max.

What’s the problem?

What’s the problem?

You have to read the whole thread. For some people, watching HDR content on the Xs Max is problematic in that the movies experience a slow down or stutter while watching them.

Downloaded tag on Dolby vision, didn’t have any problems.
Downloading ready player one in Dolby vision as we speak on my iPhone X’s max 512 gb.

This is what you claimed.

So what’s wrong with it.
What am I missing?

There’s no problem downloading the movie itself.

Playing the movie (for some) has issues. Slow playback, choppy playback. If you’re not experiencing any issues then that’s a good thing. No one knows at this point if every Xs Max is affected or only a handful. The movies I tried watching had issues. The playback was not smooth.

I played the movie for about 15 min. Didn’t see anything

I went back and read some of the posts.
Avengers infinity war isn’t even offered with hdr on iTunes, again am i missing something.

Has anybody screen recording the problem an posting it?

iPhone XS max, suffering stutter hdr Dolby vision playback on Netflix.

I just spoke to apple support. Asked me if I had a case on my phone. Had the official Apple leather case. Told me to take it off and try. Rewatched the same stuttering screen I was experiencing on lost in space, it made it lots better. Case back on, tried again, stutter. Took it off, no stutter.....

Might sound daft but maybe try putting phone in fridge and see if it still occurs. If that solves it then it’s definitely a heat throttling issue

The case is making the phone hot and the phone is being throttled by the heat?

I’ve been caseless for a few days until today. Mine stutters both with case and without. No difference :/

i tried lost in space in Netflix s1 beteren the 37 abd 38th minute mark, and i definitely sew some kind of slowdown/stuttering issues, and I have seen this effect in altered carbon too.

Are my eyes deceiving me or are you experiencing the same?
Noticed this today with Movies in ITunes. Like Stuttering or frame rate drops.

Yeah, but what was the response of apple support after that?

I have the same stuttering problem on my iPhone XS max 64GB. Don’t think it’s a heat issue. I also have an Apple leather case and I’m definitely going try Netflix without it tomorrow.

Yeah, but what was the response of apple support after that?

I contacted Apple support after experiencing this issue myself this evening and even provided them with a link to this forum. They stated that this would need to be escalated to their engineers and scheduled a call for me tomorrow evening. I also sent a tip to 9to5Mac regarding this issue, so maybe they'll publish something, which could help the resolution of this issue gain traction. Any follow-up tips you can submit to validate the issue would be appreciated. Cheers.

By the time I had checked and went back to the online chat, they had ended it!

I spent 20 mins or so playing various Dolby Vision clips without the case, particularly looking out for panning shots as I believe this is where it is noticeable, and I could still notice it, all be it to a lesser extent.
[doublepost=1537942852][/doublepost]I had a Samsung ks7000 tv for a while, had terrible stutter on panning shots, especially when watching football. I now have a lg b6 oled tv, and this also has some image processing issues on panning shots, not that I notice it too much, but definitely there.
Worried it may be an issue with the panels in the phone not being able to handle the processing rather than software.

No, that judder is something else, all OLED panels have it to some extend.
It is more like a large amount of stutter, even in not complex shots, it just appears after some time, disappears and comes back again, but in different situations/scenes and at random times. That is why I am afraid it is some kind of thermal/throttling issue or issues with power management.

Yeah, true, good point. Some of the stutter i have is much more than judder on tv panels.

This isn’t totally relevant to the thread but I thought I’d ask here instead of starting a new thread.

Does anyone know if the Amazon Prime Video app displays HDR content? Only getting a ‘HD’ icon next to the play bar during shows.

See my post above if that that is the same for you. It seems that with HW-decoding there is no stutter playing HDR.

That’s interesting, because I used infuse app to play some of my hdr movies and it was smooth, maybe that app is also forcing HW decoding and the Netflix app uses SW? But then iTunes movies have same issue so I’m really confused
[doublepost=1537951143][/doublepost]My Xs max also got super hot when playing back hdr from infuse app, so I doubt it’s thermal now. It could be the gpu getting very hot as 4K hdr is very intensive decoding, and maybe it doesn’t get so hot in Netflix is because it’s using software.
Then again the files I played in infuse app were not Dolby vision just hdr10, so maybe there’s an issue with Dolby vision specifically

Look at my post above, it has a 4K sample Dolby vision link. I had no problem playing it using nPlayer with HW-decoder. Using the SW-decider it did stutter.

Using Plex, I’m not able to play a remux 1080p without stutter. Again SW-decoder.

I’ll try to see the same movie with infuse later. It’s using HW.
Edit: It did not stutter with infuse.

Again SW vs HW seems to be the key.

Ok so that seems like a relief that it’s not a gpu problem and that it’s ios12 issue with software decoding of Dolby vision.....seems to fit with the evidence
Kind of begs the question why do Netflix and native video player in iOS use software decoding , while apps like infuse are using HW??
