I would not give my browsing data to Google. Plus iCloud private relay doesn't work with Chrome.
Hard pass ...
Try the ungoogled version of Chromium? Up to date for both Intel and ARM (Apple) CPUs. https://softaro.net/ungoogled-chromium/
Note: it will work with extensions previously added, but you can't add any extensions running the ungoogled versions.
If you need a "Sync" version, which allows adding extensions, try the (pink) Development build (click on the "Archive") presented by the Chromium Authors, version 101.0.4934.0 as of 3-9-2022, fourth down in the Mac section at the top of https://chromium.woolyss.com/

Fair enough. No browser is best for everyone. But it is noteworthy that using Safari still sends your browsing data to data farms. There's a little thing called "tracking pixels" that the tech media doesn't like to talk about.

My concern with a suddenly much faster Chrome is that Google cut some corners that will eventually lead to greater vulnerabilities. That could just be me, though…

You can add extensions once you add the "Chromium Web Store" extension

I didn't know that, but it brings up the question of how does having the "Chromium Web Store" extension installed affect the 'unconnected status of the ungoogled Chromium browser'. As you know, the whole concept of "ungoogled" is to remain completely isolated from Googles tracking and data mining activities. I think I will pass on installing that extension.

Yep, definitely renders more quickly. Download speeds are about the same with safari and edge. Truly, though. How much does speed matter these days? To me it is much more about usability. Chrome's design language has rotted away beneath it. Edge won (and is still winning) on those ground. They were winning on privacy grounds too until recently. They screwed that up by sniffing other browsers' data and passed the privacy torch back to safari. In terms of compat with weird stuff on the web chrome and edge are the same so we can write that off.

I read a snarky comment on a privacy sub saying that "chrome can now phone home faster than ever before." Seriously, though, this is the question: Does that extra .05ms render time for twitter outweigh the cost of using chrome? We have to each make that call but we should make it in an educated fashion.

I'll be sticking to Firefox. I used to use Chrome for a long time as I started using it pretty much since it came out, but Firefox Containers are a feature I just can't live without these days. I know Firefox can be slow at times, but I'm prepared to live with that.

You know, the thing that gets me isn't so much that they use my browsing data to send ads that follow me everywhere, it's that they cross pollinate between my wife and I. She'll look at a dress and then I'll start getting ads for the dress. Worse, she's bilingual and Google apparently assumes that I must be as well, since they'll start serving youtube ads in spanish to me every time she's been reading or watching something in spanish.

Note: we do not share devices, just wifi.

It may be fast, but how about used resources compared to Safari? The last time I checked Chrome on Mac it burned through my battery like a hot knife through butter...

I have no problems with battery life with my MBA M1 using Chrome extensively.
