Chrome or Safari?

What are you using as your browser on Yosemite? I keep using Safari strictly because it's faster, more energy efficient, and allows me to use my Macbook Air all day without having to charge it.

This is not possible with Chrome. I love using Chrome Canary, but the amount of CPU% it uses is horrendous. Also, its constant red colored "Google Chrome Helper" doesn't ease me.

Safari + Adguard = Amazing.
Chrome + uBlock = Fast - Battery Life.

Is there a way to auto-hide the top tab bar? The option under View -> Hide Tab Bar is grayed out for me (full-screen and window modes).

I don't think you can... interesting. If you're not using an Ad-blocker already, I'd recommend using Adguard.

I used to love Firefox until it started using insane amounts of CPU, far worse than Chrome in that regard. But overall speed, Firefox is insanely quick. Up to par with the new Safari.

I've spent a lot of time searching on google, this forum, apple support about "safari networking", which seems to be using a lot of my data. Meaning, I only pay for 15Gb per month of data and and today I've used Safari for the first time in a long time .. like their updated version.

My usage has really increased compared what I normally use when using Google Chrome.

I am getting my usage information from Activity Monitor.

Yes, it definitely sucks. I live in a rural area and my only two options for internet service are DSL, which I used the past 8 years until this spring when it became almost unusable. My only option after that was satellite (Excede), the old Wild Blue.

It has great speed, even with a wireless modem connected ... but for $80/mo I could only get 15Gb per month. There is a period between Midnight and 5am where no data is counted thus that is when I do all of my updates, downloads etc.

But as you probably already know ... that 15Gb per month is nothing really much more than email, surfing the web, no videos, nor large downloads.

I use the Activity Monitor to track my usage to match with their program...it's really hard to just use an average of .5 of a gig every day.

Good news ... I may have jumped the gun asking for help on the "safari networking", think it was sucking up usage. I just looked at my internet usage on the provider's site for the past 4 hours ... it was the same increase as I had the first 4 hours this afternoon using Google Chrome.

So it looks like the "new" Safari will be my default browser now ... which is good because I like all the improvements ... and it is noticeably faster.

Safari still blows on many sites

I would love to use Safari as my main browser. I think the redesign is wonderful and introduces a very cogent way of browsing, taking into consideration your bookmarks.

However - Safari still seems plagued by failing to load or properly render the page on many, many sites. On some, it may finally load completely but only after a considerable amount of time. Often, it will return an error that it can't find the server on a particular site. When that happens, returning to Chrome or Firefox returns that same error for a few minutes then all is well. Its as if its affecting the IP stack somehow. I've checked this in reverse, loading the site several times in Chrome and Firefox, then I return to Safari and the same issue occurs.

I live in Germany - I'm curious if the issue is my service provider. But Chrome and Firefox never fail like this. Anyone else? I've combed a few other blogs and others seem to have had the same complaint for the last 2 or 3 iterations of this browser.

Had a look at Safari, not bad at all. Very futuristic..
One of the better things Apple released with Yo...

Still, I prefer Chrome.

Oh I am sure there is something in the Book of Jobs against the favicons. Such terrorist little things they are. The ultimate threat to Browser feng shui.

But you never know.. In a few years Apple might quietly introduce them and the current Apple-fan naysayers will loud it as the most revolutionary thing ever.. Just wait and see...

I'm with you. This is one of the things holding me back from using Safari. I can't stand the minimalistic view need a little color. Can't tell any difference speed wise.

So you can choose to hide the tab bar, but it only actually hides when you've got a single tab open - once you open two or more tabs, it seems to show the tab bar by default.

Does safari support 1080p (and higher) youtube html 5 in Yosemite?

I'm holding off updating for a few days so I can't test this. It does not in Mavericks. Chrome has much better support for various things like that. I read Safari was supposed to be getting better though.

On Mavericks I had switched totally to Chrome but the new Safari in Yosemite is at a completely different level. The speed is incredible and the functionality is excellent so far.
Changing some Display settings in preferences>accessibility has made it even better visually.

The only Safari question I have so far is the zoom. Is there a way to change the calibration of Command +/-. It just makes to big a jump and would like to find some middle ground. Currently goes from to small to to big.
Any way to adjust??

Ok got it! I wish there was a way to have the tab bar auto hide, then reappear when you move the mouse to the top of the screen. Maybe someday.

Firefox is my #1. I have never cared for Safari, and the UI has been changed in IOS8 / Yosemite for reasons that are not at all clear, which has made it even worse to use. It is faster on Yo, but not as fast as Firefox.

i really enjoy both chrome and safari. my only problem is I can't seem to find an adblocker to block all the ads on ESPN videos or youtube videos on safari. however on chrome it blocks all of those ads whenever i need.

I just downloaded AdGuard to use with Safari on Yosemite but it isn't blocking YouTube ads. Is this just not possible?

EDIT: In fact, it's acting really weird now and just not loading videos with ads, which doesn't happen when I use AdBlock Plus, though I think that's generally making the whole browser a bit slower?

A bit scary, I agree. Who knows what they've been seeing from us all these years of usage. I make sure to install Ghostery on all my browsers now.
