What are your experiences with Chromecast and Chromecast Audio? if you are in the Apple ecosystem.
I'm not super impressed with Apple TV, but will always have a Mac and iPhone.

I know Google is iOS compatible, but to get the most out of Google products, would it be wise to purchase a cheap android tablet?

There are probably more Android apps than iOS that support Chromecast. However, Chromecast is supported in a considerable number of iOS apps and you might find that every streaming service you're interested in has Chromecast support in the iOS version of their app. You can check here by hovering your cursor over the apps you're interested in: https://www.google.com/chromecast/apps

Perhaps the only significant benefit of Android is screen mirroring to Chromecast, which is supported on Android but not iOS: https://support.google.com/chromecast/answer/6059461?hl=en-GB
However, I never use screen mirroring myself so it wouldn't be a big deal for me if I were making your decision.

I have both an Apple TV (2nd gen) and a Chromecast on my tv. I use the Chromecast far more often. I used it with my Mac to watch the entire Man in the High Tower series on Amazon.

It really depends on your use.

For $35, the Chromecast is such a better deal. My wife uses her iPhone 6 all the time to cast HBO, Hulu, and Netflix and the like. Not to mention, Google Photos is 100x better than the iCloud Photo Library solution.

You can screen mirror a mac on Chromecast with the Cast Chrome extension for Mac, as well.

Never understood the importance of mirroring a phone screen, personally.
