I have the original chromecast which still works perfectly well. I know that a newer version and been released. Are there ang significant differences between the first and current generation?

New one is only beneficial if you're in a congested 2.4GHz WIFI space otherwise the original is more compact, has a nicer design and has 2GB storage instead of 256MB.

AC and 5GHz were the biggest reasons I bought a second gen. I had all my wireless devices on the 5GHz band and the old Chromecast was 2.4GHz only so it became useless to me.
Dolby Digital + was also a nice addition.

I have both the 1st & 2nd Gen and the 2nd gen is a nice upgrade for $35. It's faster and works a little smoother. But it certainly isn't a must do. If you think you can wait until v3, that wouldn't be a bad thing.

Have one from a couple years ago, still works fine, even streams hd movies from my plex server on a computer no problem. Only thing I hate about it, is I wish Amazon and Google would come to some agreement to allow Amazon Movies app to work on Chromecast to stream. I have Prime and it sucks not being able to do so and don't have fire tv/stick.
