Not sure what is going on, but I have 2 tabs open (one with personal gmail and other with work outlook) and CPU utilization is way up and fans are going full speed. I'll reboot and see if it helps. Restarting chrome did nothing.

I'm still continuing to have high cpu + fans issues and increased battery drain. Not sure what the issue is. I'm visiting all the same sites as I used to before. Anyone else having this problem?

Normally my battery lasts 6-8 hours. Now I get 4-5 hours.

Have you seen this thread?

I had not seen this. However, my issue is new. It just started happened in the last 3 days. Today I had only 2 tabs --- gmail and yahoo finance -- and I had the machine heating up and fan going at full speed. Actually, I have about 14 tabs open now and it sounds like my laptop fan is spinning like a plane's engines ready for takeoff.

I have started using Chrome since the latest iteration of Safari is pure garbage. I do, occasionally, have issues with the fans spinning up, but it tends to be on certain websites, such as Quora—not with the number of tabs open.

I used to have issues with certain sites in the past, but these past few days it seems like anything gets it going, like e.g. yahoo finance.

@JohnE121 Thanks to your post (which led me to https://chromeisbad.com/), I downloaded the brave browser. It feels awesome so far. I have not liked other browsers' UI (safari, firefox, opera) and hence stuck with chrome, but I can easily see myself using brave. It turns out they have just copied chrome's UI for the most part so it immediately feels at home.
