Cinema Display for Gaming?

So I built my gaming rig a few months ago and absolutely love it. I've been using a 1080p Samsung monitor with it and my Air. I recently upgraded my PC's motherboard to an AsRock z77 Extreme 6.

Basically I've got two questions:

1. Would any Apple Cinema Displays (even if an older generation) work with my PC given that motherboard?

2. Would my PC be able to power a display at 2560x1440 and run games at a smooth framerate? (My PC's specs are in my signature)


I'd appreciate any input you guys have. Honestly, I'm not dying for a new monitor, but that higher dpi would be pretty phenomenal.

I would personally avoid Apple monitors, they are rather expensive. If you have sufficient funds then maybe consider Dells top of the line Ultrasharp or something along those lines.

As for 2560x1440, I think you are entering GTX680 or SLI territory for running the most demanding games maxed out. I would recommend searching for some game benchmarks with that card before buying a new monitor.

For example at 1900x1200 I can not run Crysis 2 at ultra settings with my overclocked 5870 with the high resolution pack and with DX11 enabled.

The Apple LED Cinema Display yes, it uses mini displayport, which is on most video cards as far as I know. The Apple Thunderbolt display, which is the same panel, won't though, you need a thunderbolt port on your motherboard, and there are only a few thunderbolt equipped motherboards around. For laptops, the Apple displays are perfect, they have a bunch of connectivity (USB, FW800, ethernet, thunderbolt) and a Magsafe charger built in. But for a gaming computer, you could probably save some money and get something else, because you may not really use some of the Apple display's extra functionality that comes at the higher price.
