Cingular carryover minutes

I spoke with a Cingular phone monkey a few month ago. This is what they said regarding carry over minutes and signing up for a new plan:

If you sign a new 2 year collar, you'll only be able to transfer minutes equal to the new plan (what?). Example: I have ~2400 rollover minutes, but if I sign up for a 500 minute/month plan with my iphone, I'll only be able to rollover 500 minutes.

Can anyone confirm?

I wonder how they work it if you up your minutes to a shared family plan. right now I have 900 minutes but I'm looking at picking up an iPhone for the wife and one for myself, and converting my plan to a family plan w/ more minutes.

Also, sounds like you don't use your rollover minutes anyways since you have 2400 of them so why worry?

I have 700 minutes per month and have rolled up 2,500 minutes of rollover. I agree with you that I probably won't ever use it all. However, I can't imagine that they would restart your carryover with a new contract if you're renewing. I wish you could trade it in for other features after a certain period of time.

a year and some ago i decreased my monthly plan from 600 minutes to 450. i remember my rollover minutes got shortened, too, but i can't recall how severe the penalty was. i didn't really care, because i'm rarely over anyway. i currently have 3,300 rollover minutes.

I'm curious ... does anyone actually feel they make use of this feature? As in you've actually had to cash in rollover minutes vs. purely accruing them in case of an emergency?

It sounded really good in the beginning, but then eventually it seems like it's just overage protection. I think I've only gone over my minutes once in the eight or nine years I've had a cell. Although that probably also means I've been on higher minute plans than I really needed.

Of course, it helps that my girlfriend and I talk at night. So I manage to stay under my 1000 minute plan while talking 3500+ minutes last month!

Carryover

Lets say u have a plan that includes 900 Anytime mins and you have 2,500 rollover mins accumulated, then you decide to drop down to a plan that only has 450 Anytime mins, out of those 2,500rollover mins u have accumulated your only allowed to bring with you 450 as that is all your plan includes. Hope that helps clear the air if their was any confusion.

There's no way (IMO) all this stuff is going to get sorted out at an Apple store at purchase.

Surely they'll have a 'buy the phone and you have to activate online' type deal??
