One thing I hate about most of the Cingular stores is they they often don't seem to know about their own products. I recently went through this, prior to deciding to go with another carrier for wireless.
Assuming you have a PowerBook with a PCMCIA slot, [aka PC Card slot], you can indeed get a Cingular wireless PC Card and use it with a Mac OS. Here's the catch, the drones at the store all say the Mac OS is not supported. However, if you get a card where the vendor supports OS X, you can make it work. Start by looking at the cards Cingular offers, then make sure the vendors site says it supports OS X. When Cingular says they don't support OS X, they actually mean their GUI dialer app is a Windows-only app. But, if OS X can see your card, you can create a dial-up networking connection. [Well, you can when tethering your phone anyway, so I assume you can w/ a card too]. Check the Cingular site, under the business side, for a doc that tells you how.

FWIW, I went with Verizon for wireless. Since I did not want to break my Cingular contract for voice, I do pay like $20 more for my Verizon wireless, but for me it was worth it. The people at the store were actually educated on their product and service offerings. OS X was fully supported on all of the cards I considered, and they had the latest & greatest hardware to choose from. Cingular has last years stuff, and some stores never heard of some of the things I asked for, even when I quoted a press release from their company. The few that had heard of things I asked for said they expected a long wait.
Hated to turn this into a vent, but it urks me when a rep says their product will not work with OS X, when in fact it will!
