Cisco Systems came out with a full-page ad in the NYT to promote its' "iPhone":

This seems like a rather silly avenue for Cisco to go down; i thought they were seriously negotiating with Apple?

Not really 'silly'. They have the rights to do what they want and so are promoting their product as they please. If Cisco and Apple come to an agreement then thats fine. As it stands Apple cant do anything about Ciscos ad as Apple dont own the name. We all know Apple will win as they will just pay whatever is needed. I think Apple were forced into this scenario after all the hype about an 'iPhone'. Rumour mills made the non existant brand very valuable and so Apple wants a slice.

They're strengthening their position. If they are actively promoting their use of the name, they're more likely to win should it go to court. Therefore Apple have to play it Cisco's way in the talks or lose the name for good.

As is stated in the article: "There seems to be a question about whether they were really making use of the trademark from the time they acquired it." It will look like Cisco wasn't really very interested in it's tm until it thought it could get a lot more out of Apple. In the end i think they just want to get more out of the negotiations.

This is so annoying--it's NOT a good name. Apple should ditch it and go with :apple:Phone. I don't know if this is a matter of pride on Steve's part or what, but Apple needs to wake up and realize that it's a dumb name. I can understand wanting a unique product name, but iPhone isn't even unique. The nice thing about the iPod is that pod is such an unusual word, but the same really can't be said for iPhone--it just sounds so generic.

I agree - i kinda like the :apple: Phone name too.

But if they do that, after all the publicity for the 'iPhone', they may be afraid that people will be confused (what with the millions of Linksys iphones that will be around ;) )

MacPhone

I agree - i kinda like the :apple: Phone name too.

It's better than iPhone, but I still say MacPhone would be the way to go. Get people hooked on the MacPhone, get them used to the idea of using a "Mac", and reel them in!

They can still change it. Us Steve worshippers have been reading about the iPhone forever, but the average person just knows that Apple, the iPod maker, has a phone coming out. As long as they change the name before they begin active advertising, all is well.

:D

I love the 'retro look' bullet point next to Cisco's phone. It looks like every other phone on the market place!!

This is great free press for Apple - Genius!!.
