Cathou - L50 Emp/Psi Defender
Anneka - L30 Peacebringer
Ma'am - L21 Merc/Force Field Mastermind

Hey LastLine--I don't play COH anymore, but I was curious--what keeps you going back? I love superheroes, but didn't feel like the experience was compelling enough (I'm used to the grind to get better items, but without an inventory, it seemed a little less addictive). I was also perplexed that there was no basic attack, that all attacks were special moves.

I still play (30 months now) on the US servers, Triumph and Guardian mostly.

I personally like the Diablo-esque hack and slash style of game play. While the missions you undertake usually aren't terribly deep (though more recently created story arcs are orders of magnitude better), I like to get my variety from playing different roles (offense, defense, offensive support, defensive support, army of one, etc). I also like to continually run my character against the red line to see just how far I can take them.

I like that playing CoX has no overhead. I can log on, and be on a full team within a few minutes. I have friends that are really into WoW. But before every raid, they have to spend something like 2 hours preparing for it: tedious tasks like crafting potions, etc. I have another friend who plays FFXI. It takes him an hour to get a on a team, and its next to impossible to get one if you don't have the expected cookie-cutter build and equipment.

I'm perfectly fine in trading a more shallow play experience for freedom. I don't have to spend hours on end crafting, and I don't have to worry about keeping up with the latest loot. If I have a two hour window to play in, then I actually get to play for the whole two hours. I can tackle pretty much any mission with any number of players with any team composition. These are the things that keep me playing.

More recently, several game updates have added a lot to the game like the new crafting system, new Task Forces, new story arcs, etc. I also play the game with my wife, so I always have a partner. We tend to play complimentary characters, which gives us a lot of freedom to do whatever we want.

Interesting points. To be clear, I totally get what you say about WoW. I enjoy it every now and again, but I never keep up a sustained subscription, because to me the casual experience isn't completely everything, but the raid experience is frightful--to be a raid-er, you have to devote your life to WoW, something I'm extremely not willing to do.

I might try CoH out again, though now that I'm on a MacBook instead of a custom-built tower, that might not work out so well. I don't mind shallow gameplay, but it was really tough to get excited about the rewards, which were inspirations and enhancements. It sounds so ridiculous/materialistic, but that cool new item you get in Diablo or WoW makes a big difference to me. Understandably, creating that in CoH would be dumb beyond all reason.

"I just found the Chilling Cape of the Bear! Awesome! Now all I need to complete the set is the Justice Insignia of Sparks!"

@phanboyjohn

You should try it again. The rewards are actually more meaningful now.

The new Invention system that came out recently is rather fun when you get into it. It has aspects of crafting and "loot" (components to create crafted items, Named Enhancement Sets, unique Enahncements, etc) and a real, open market (sell or trade your unwanted compnents, set items, or literally anything else on a market that spans all the servers), but is really well ballanced so that if you dont want to get into it, it isnt going to leave you underpowered. There are additional drops like costume pieces and temp powers as well.

Additionally, another expansion is coming out shortly: The Ritki invassion is in full force again, and they are completely reworking the Ritki Crash Site into a zone where both Heroes and Villians can team up to push back the invasion.

It should be good for at least a few month's entertainment. Although I highly doubt your MB would be able to play... hopefully you didnt get rid of your tower?

totally agree...i've quit now twice...but something always pulls me back...not sure what...

I have played both CoH/CoV since betas and well after two accounts on CoH and one on CoV I found the game to boring and still have friends telling me I should come back.

and I to loved the superhero theme thats what attracted me to the game in the first place.

Actually not a lot - I took a year and a half break and just came back into it again lately, got a good social group going and that's enough for me at the minute.
