I just played a single player game and lost outta nowhere after 500 turns, I was in the last AI's base and lost.

I'm not sure how I lost, did he win through some kind of cultural victory? He did reach Future Era long before I did.

Also some of my cities were starving and I had my workers set on auto but I guess they didn't build enough farms around the cities? How do I fix this problem? I feel if I built more farms, then it would take away from the mines and trading posts and other stuff. Quite confused.

Is there some sort of strategy guide or explanation I can read to better help me understand the game? This is my first Civ game.

Thanks!

Could be a cultural or scientific victory.
When your city are starving you need to do some micromanagement over production focus and over the squares your city works at (city screen). You can also starve your cities intentionally when you lack gold or production (hammers). I find that in the middle of a game it is often required to focus some cities on just one aspect and sacrifice their growth.

There is a huge guide on the official website.

www.civfanatics.com is also an excellent resource for all things Civ. There isn't as much Civ5 strategy there as there is for Civ4, but it is immensely helpful when just getting started.

The gameplay in Civ V is flawed and unbalanced, but the major patch that's been promised will hopefully fix some of the more glaring issues.

For now however, a successful tactic for new players (and one that certainly helped me) is to build lots of Trading Posts and ally yourself to as many maritime city states as you can, and they should provide all the food you need.

you should try playing civ 3 to get a gist of how civ games work. ive only played 2, 3, and 4, but from what ive heard jumping straight to 5 is frustrating
