Okay so I just downloaded Civilization IV and therefor a complete Civ noob. Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Just little things of the game don't make sense to me for example, I have a few units put together and I want to try and attack someone else city. I click on all my units to attack (example 10 archers) and tell them to attack one warrior or archer. Instead of all my units attacking.. just one does and he dies every time.. For some reason I cannot get all my units to attack and it is annoying. I am prob doing something wrong. I am grateful for any help! Thanks!

You can't attack with your archers as a group unless you have a Great General, with which you can make an Army. Since you're still using archers, I'm guessing you haven't progressed far enough in the game to get a Great General.

Also, cities are a lot harder to attack "naked" without artillery bombardment beforehand. Each city has a little percentage number on or around its icon. That percentage is the defensive bonus given to the defending units in the city.

You should bombard with catapults to reduce this percentage to 0% before using your archers.

thank you very much.. So you cannot attack with a big group of people at once until you have this "great" person..? See these are the things I did not know.. do you need one 'great' person with each group of units to all attack at once??

It's been a while since I played, and I don't usually get Great Generals because they suck; but once the GG creates an army they're consumed. The army then remains for as long as it survives.

Look it up in the Civilopedia perhaps.

Correct, you can't do a stack attack without the Great General. Also correct that you need one GG per stack.

Until you get to that point, you just make all your units attack individually. They will each take health off the enemy units, and if you've got the balance right, you'll eventually win. Taking cities early on can take a lot of units, simply because you can't bombard their defence bonus away.

Although if you RTFM you will find that there are some units that ignore city defenses. You don't NEED the GG, it just helps. Finding Iron early on and then making attack units makes it a lot easier. If I can, I race to Tanks before launching a strategic land grab from a neighbour, capturing useful resources. Don't waste turns capturing cities that give you nothing or deny them nothing.

How do you train a Great General (or whatever its called), and how come on the trailer or whatever it looks cool like the battle scenes.. then in the game on one square it only shows one person at a time (even if i have multiple units in that square)

1) You don't train them. Great Persons appear. Do some Googling for an in-depth explanation of the Great Person system as it's a lengthy one.

2) I have no idea what trailer you're looking at, ergo, I have no idea what you're talking about.

Just like if you youtube a battle in CIV IV you can see like 10 musketmen taking out 8 swordmen (or something of the nature), not ALWAYS just 1 archer killing 1 catapult or stupid crap like that. Like I was hoping to see big battles, not 1 unit on 1 unit
