Hi,

Is clamshell mode viable for long-term use with MBP? I will use it as a laptop (as intended) but I'm seriously considering MBP over a Mini for many reasons. Using it in clamshell mode will be how it is used most of the time, but I'd like to know if this could be detrimental to the longevity of the display, or the system in general?

I'm considering the 16" model, as these apparently have better cooling than the 14" which seem to throttle a bit more due to their physical size.

Can anyone recommend any stands for MBP for clamshell mode? Are there any with fans that can help keep the air moving around the computer?

Maybe someone with more experience using clamshell mode can clarify but personally my 16" m1Max MBP rarely even gets slightly warm, when I use it in clamshell mode I don't even think about the heat.

Currently I have a dual monitor arm setup. One with a display and one with a tray to hold the MBP on. I never liked the vertical stands since it 100% kills your ability to use the laptop screen with it and still takes up desk space. The monitor arm clears the desktop space and lets me flip open the display anytime I want to use it.

My usage is probably 75% open screen 25% closed.

Good to know! Thanks!! I'll probably use it open on the desk in that case.

ive used this for a few months now. I dont have a lot of space on my desktop so this sits elsewhere. it has a dongle you plug into the mac so you are not wearing out the port. i carry the macbook to/from the office and this has been heavenly.
