Someone told me here that the MBP has a "clamshell mode." This is when you plug in an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse. The display of the MBP should turn of, and I want to close the display, but so it won't sleep. However, whenever I close the lid, it always sleeps. How do I make it so it doesn't?

try plugging everything in first then closing it. If that doesn't work, then just don't close it :D

You can change those preferences in the preference pane under display. Plug in your external monitor and go to the preference pane click on the display icon and there you can configure your setting there should be a check box that will enable clamshell mode.
