i think im gonna get an external monitor fer my mbp. does plugging up an external monitor in clamshell mode strain the graphics card? will programs that utilize the graphics card run slower in result?

Well, ultimately outputting at a higher resolution will drive the video card harder. Otherwise, if the resolution is the same, then no.
