Clamshell Question - Please Help!!!!!

Hi everyone. I have a 300MHz Clamshell iBook that I recently got a new 20GB internal hard drive for. I successfully installed this hard drive after removing the old 3GB one. My problem started when I attempted to format this drive for the first time and install OS 10.3 (Panther). I partitioned the disk (one partition) and formatted, but when I installed the OS, I got through Base System Part 1 okay only to have the installation quit with the error message "Errors were encountered. Please try again."

I know the hardware doesn't have any problems, as the disk is brand new, I've done the procedure before on another Clamshell with no problems, and everything was peachy keen on that iBook (as the OS was already installed on the disk). Could anyone please 1) tell me what I'm doing wrong, 2) walk me through the correct procedure, and/or 3) point me to external links where this procedure is described?

Again, I just need to format the disk and install OS 10.3 so I can use my tricked-out Clamshell. Thank you in advance very, very much!!!!!

Are the Panther disks retail?

Yes, these disks are retail. I've used them dozens of times before on other iBooks with no problems. Thanks!

And you have the correct number of licenses for all those Panther installs, right? We're not into knowingly help folks do illegal things.

Did you update the firmware?

I've had no problems installing Panther on my clamshell. I doubt there is a procedure out there to follow, other than the regular install procedure.

Just make sure the partition you are trying to install to use is big enough.
Maybe it's also best if this is the first partition.

You could try and install only what you need (custom install without languages etc.) this might ignore the part of the installation where things went wrong.

Just try to erase the disk first -- again -- (using Disk Utility from the install disk menu) and see what happens.

Yes, I do have the proper licenses for the Panther installs. Everything is in order. Thanks for the help so far everyone, I'll try it and see what happens!!!

Hmmm...should I try formatting and installing under OS 9 first? I have the disk and license for that....

Yes.. because you will need OS 9 to update the firmware, and if the firmware hasn't been updated, then you won't be able to install OS X. Once that hurdle is cleared, we can troublshoot more..

Also, does Panther require firewire? Does the clamshell have firewire (I thought they don't)

Panther required integrated USB.
