Classic System Folder Not Found!

I thought this would be straightforward.

I have PB12 G4 that came from the factory with Tiger. I've recently found a Classic application I'd like to use, so I got the CD that came with the computer and installed the Classic support from disc 2. This put a "System" folder on my hard drive.

However, the Classic preferences application will not find this folder. When I open the preference app it searches for new folders and announces that I do not have a OS 9 system folder. Trying to launch any classic app of course gives me a similar error. Whats up with this?

When you say it put a system folder on your hard drive, do you mean in addition to the one that was there before? The Classic system folder should have a large 9 on it, as I recall.

If you do have Classic installed, it should be in "System Folder" in the root of your boot drive. "System" is the OS X installation, not Classic.

To properly install a classic sys folder, you need to boot while holding down the C key. Then you can install from the CD. Do it as a clean install without updating the hard drive. If the OS has installed properly, you should go into prefs in OS X and change your classic prefs to point to the preferences folder.

What?! That is completely incorrect. In no way could that possibly be true, ever.

The EASIEST way to install Classic is to just take your system support DVD (or CD number 2 I guess) and open up the hidden disk image containing the OS 9 "System Folder" and copy it to your hard drive. The end.

A clean install of Tiger does NOT include Classic. No retail-boxed version of OS X has EVER included classic. Classic is only included on the system CDs or DVD that came with your Mac.

Hey, thanks everyone for the help so far.

Yes, I misspoke. What the installer on Disk 2 does is put a "System Folder" folder on the root of my hard drive. It is not called "System", but "System Folder".

Yes, I installed it from Disk 2, I didn't copy it myself (don't see a folder to copy) but ran the installer package which cheerfully tells me it will install System 9.2 so that I can run Classic applications. I wish it were so!

Still, now it is there copied; how can I convince the preference app that it is so?

isnt there an option to tell OS X where to look for the folder if it found none?

can you verify that the "system folder" is actually there?

The system folder is there, yes, I can see it and all its contents.

No, there is no way to specify where the system folder is other than the volume to look in (hard drive).

C'mon, someone else must have installed OS 9.2 on a recent PB12? Did it just work?
