I've got a 2015 Macbook Pro that I'm planning on doing a clean install of Big Sur on. All of my data (iMessages, documents, photos) have been backed up to iCloud. I only have a few apps that weren't downloaded from the App Store - stuff like Chrome and Firefox. That being said, is a backup worth it when all of my data has been backed up to iCloud and I only have a couple external apps? I know making a backup is the preferred method, but when I have such limited data in the first place - is this necessary? Biggest things to me are iMessages and photos - but as I stated, these are backed up in iCloud.

Bumping thread - is a backup required if I've got my photos and iMessages synced with iCloud?

Your machine is supported by Apple for upgrade/installation of Big Sur, it seems.
Ultimately the decision is yours. If you feel everything's covered and you know you can definitely get back to Catalina (or whatever you're currently running) then possibly not.
Are you sure you can go back? Maybe have a usb installer or checked to make sure recovery/internet recovery works?
