Clean install of Lion, backup from Time machine?

Running Snow Leopard and have developer Lion which is working fine.
I have everything backed up to Time Machine and was thinking of formatting hard drive and doing a clean install of SL and then Lion as it seems is needed, then backing up from Time machine.

Have restored the odd file from TM but never really used much so am wondering if doing the above will be a load of hassle?

What? You have Lion installed and backed up to TM and you want a clean install , so you are going to install SL then Lion again? So you have SL on a separate partition and you want a Lion only install?

I understood that you had to have SL installed before you could install Lion, so I was going to format the HD, install SL then the final release Lion. Then I wanted to back up from TM. I assumed TM would have all my apps and settings so I would be close to how I was before the format but having formatted would have cleared out a load of junk

I guess I'm confused you said you're running Lion correct?
When the final release of Lion is out you should be able to do a clean install and restore from a TM backup made while running the DP version of Lion.

1) You don't have to install Snow Leopard to clean install Lion. Just make a boot disk from the Lion install DMG. Read on these forums to find out how.

2) Backing up with Time Machine, doing a clean install, and then restoring your apps from Time Machine is equivalent to not doing a clean install in the first place. So no, it won't clear up any junk as it will restore everything exactly as it was, except for the OS, which gets overwritten anyway during even an upgrade.

However, you'll have to clean install Lion anyway as you apparently can't upgrade from Lion Dev Preview to Lion Final Version (or can you?).

So your only option is to make a boot disk, and clean install Lion from there, and then restore your apps from Time Machine. It's what you wanted to do anyway, but keep in mind that it won't be any "cleaner" than any upgrade, and also you don't need Snow Leopard.

Yes, like baryon stated restoring from TM would not be very clean, so please ignore my suggestion. Clone your drive. Do a clean install and copy any data or applications you need from your cloned hard drive.
