After a clean install of Sierra on my late 2011 MacBook Pro 17" on a new SSD is stuck in "Graphics Card: High Perf." mode according to the Activity Monitor despite the fact that in the Energy Saver tab of System Preferences the "Automatic graphics switching" is set. In this mode I get 2 hours less battery life than before installing Sierra. Any tips as to how to remedy this?

Thanks for your reply. I installed gfxcardstatus per your suggestion and exited the applications gfxcardstatus suggested. Rebooted (not sure it was necessary, but I did) and voila the integrated graphics worked, the MacBook can switch back and forth between discrete and integrated. For the record, Skim and a Canon scanner app were the dependencies that kept the discrete graphics locked.
