Clean Mojave install, RX 580, USB

Hello,

Right now I got both ATI 5770 and NVIDIA GTX 970 installed in my Mac Pro.

I want to future proof it (be able to install Mojave) and since WEB drivers from NVIDIA aren't available I have decided to get a Sapphire RX 580 instead...

I have been used to using my 5770 for boot-ups/clean installs etc.

I can't use my 5770 for Mojave install since it isn't METAL-compatible.

The RX 580 is OOTB but what are my possibilities when performing a completely clean install?

Will I be able to install Mojave from a USB with only my RX 580 connected?

Yes. RX 580 has createinstallmedia USB installer and Recovery support.

I totally understand if it's too complicated to explain but...

Why is it that with a OOTB GPU you can get acces to 'createinstallmedia USB installer and Recovery support' but no boot-screen to choose different drives like a EFI GPU...
I mean if for some reason in the past my 5770 stopped working and all I had was the GTX 970 I would be lost?

Apple added RX 580 drivers to both createinstallmedia USB installer and Recovery, so, after the driver is loaded it works.

No NVIDIA GPU post Kepler has drivers in the macOS installer or Recovery.

I know this question isn’t 100% related to the thread topic but it’s my thread so F… it

Why is it that APFS (which we are forced to use on Mojave) isn’t a ”problem” anymore?

I just remember when HS got released a lot of people were concerned about using APFS instead HFS+ and not being able to enable TRIM…

Who says it isn’t? I’m sure it IS a problem for some people. I would imagine those people decided not to upgrade their OS.

APFS works okay for most people and supposedly brings a lot of data protections. It’s also apparently optimized for SSD drives, which most of us have now.

I like HFS+ personally, but nothing about APFS precludes me from using it. No use in complaining about it, it’s here to stay.

APFS had some problems with buggier SSD firmware and some SSDs that are in reality RAID drives.
If you stick to what Apple recomends and to the list of what we know that works, APFS is not a problem. It’s just different.

TRIM has nothing to do with APFS or HFS.

Guess it's a personal choice yes... a year ago or so some people also had problems with APFS, BOOTCAMP and WINDOWS (so people were forced to use HFS+)
Think I saw another thread the other day about BOOTCAMP update so WINDOWS can recognize APFS via BOOTCAMP now?

TRIM has nothing to do with APFS or HFS.

Guess I misunderstood at the time... But it's recommended to enable TRIM at all times right?

Yes, iMacPro BootCamp supports APFS.
