I find the info on the Apple upgrade site confusing. Can I do this upgrade directly or is it a two-part process?

Two part process. OS 10.6.8 can not upgrade directly to Sierra (10.12). You have to upgrade to El Capitan (10.11) first. Then after that is complete you can upgrade to Sierra.

EDIT: The minimum OS you need to update to Sierra is 10.7. You can still purchase OS 10.7 & 10.8 from Apple, but OS 10. 9 and 10.10 are no longer available from Apple unless you have previously "Purchased" (downloaded) them. 10.11 is still available from Apple for people like you that have 10.6.
