Right I brought a leather loop strap from cex, used but looks brand new. It stinks though and I've tried washing it but it's not budging, can anyone recommend a way to wash it so it doesn't smell of smoke anymore before I end up returning it.

Some good quality leather conditioner, applied lightly, might help.

Neatsfoot oil is very good for cleaning and conditioning leather.
You do not need to put a lot on though, then just rub it in with your fingers.
