are cleaning apps needed on a MacBook?

im wondering about Mac Pilot and clean my Mac x
I see them being sponsors on YouTube videos. is it a useful app to have and run once in a while if my Mac is feeling sluggish?

I've been using CleanMyMac for more than a year now, and I've had a great experience with it. Ultimately, it probably comes down to how organized you are with your computer, apps, and cleaning it up yourself. I just run CLM once a month to make sure there is no junk, duplicates, malware, and to find ways to free up RAM on my computer.

Whatever you do, don't get those! CleanMyMac X is useless. Use Malwarebytes to remove malware. Apple Support told me to use it and they have a free version! There is no need for cleaning apps. To free up storage, clear your caches and delete old apps or files.

Yes, that's true. Apple Support also asked me to download and run Malwarebytes maybe 2 years ago when I had an issue with my Mac.

I see a lot of people being critical of CleanMyMac. I’ve used it for a long time on several Macs in the family. If it is doing what it says it is doing then I have to say I’m very pleased with it. I don’t believe it is a scam. I just wish there was something out there for iPads. Surely they have system junk to clean out.

Note I also use Malwarebytes too.

Any app that claims to "free up RAM" is without question a scammy app. RAM doesn't need to be "freed".

I too am surprised by how many people hate CleanMyMac. It was that scorn that kept me from trying it for many months. My Mac finally got so buggy though that I spent a whole morning a few days ago doing virtually everything that Apple & various CleanMyMac haters recommended to try to fix it. (This happened right after an update.) Nothing worked. Here's a summary of what I was experiencing:

1) Multiple apps were continually non-responsive. Often even force quit didn't work;
2) The whole desktop would repeatedly freeze, requiring a hard re-start;
3) I would get "running out of RAM" warnings;
4) Mail wouldn't send. Then when I re-started mail wouldn't even open. When I finally managed to get it to open all mail accts. were offline, and wouldn't go online;

I finally tried CleanMyMac out of desperation. It cleaned out a bunch of junk files & found some malware that Norton 360 missed. That was almost a week ago and I have had no issues since!

Just saying.
