Hi,

So my friend has Mountain Lion GM (not a developer), I don't even want to know where and how he got it!

At the moment, it doesn't appear in MAS as being installed, like how if you have Lion it shows up as "download" in the purchased tab.

If Apple don't find any major bugs and release the GM build as the final one (most likely). On release day will it just turn up as download, or will you have to purchase it before it shows up in MAS (purchased tab).

My argument is, he will have to purchase it before it shows up in the purchased tab.

His argument is, "its installed, therefore once released it should automatically show as purchased".

Who's right and who's wrong.

It will only show up in the purchased tab if you buy it or redeem a code for ML as a developer or as part of the up to date program.

If you obtained the copy elsewhere it won't show up in the purchased tab and you won't be able to download the installer/updates for the installer from the MAS.

I don't believe either of you are fully correct. If you purchased new Mac bundled with Lion, Lion does not show up under purchases nor are you allowed to purchase it. I assume igoing forward, his Mountain Lion will be like that.

You will not get a free copy of the public release because you pirated a beta. Registered developers get a free code to redeem, but just because you obtained the beta version of the software, you don't get the public release free. It's like microsoft. They have the public beta of Windows 8, but to get the actual Windows 8, you are going to have to buy it.

Lion does not show up under purchases nor are you allowed to purchase it.

You can purchase and download the lion installer with lion installed, just hold down the option key and go to Lion's app page.

Tell your <cough> "friend" <cough> the you... err, "he" will have to pay for it.

No free lunch unless you download 10.8.0 illegally somewhere.

That's because the MAS is smart enough to know which model Macs came with Lion originally, just as it will know that his did not come with ML originally.

Eg, Now that the guy has a ML recovery, if he tries an internet recovery it will prompt him for his apple id. Once he enters it will deny him the download. He also won't be able to get updates from MAS.

He won't be able to purchase it through the MAS because it will show as "Installed" instead of "$19.99". However, ML will not show up in the Purchases tab. I know this because of Lion last year.

The solution to this is above

You can purchase and download the lion installer with lion installed, just hold down the option key and go to Lion's app page.
