I have my Mountain lion apple mail downloading emails from my gmail account with all the attachments.

Apple mail is becoming very slow to respond and to open new messages. Also I am running out of space. I would like to completely clear my apple mail and have it re-download my messages without downloading my messages.

I am very concerned about deleting my emails from my gmail server so I wanted to make sure I asked before doing something stupid.

Can anyone help?

Yes. Quit Mail and open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal and put in the command :
Code:
sqlite3 ~/Library/Mail/Envelope\ Index vacuum index;

Wait until you get another Terminal prompt and then reopen Mail. See if that speeds up Mail.

Also on your saved email boxes right click on the saved box (in Mail) and go to the menu item (with the Saved email box still highlighted) and choose Mailbox, Rebuild. See if that helps too.
