The sound my 4 day old iMac i7 makes right now.
Went down last night.
Now boots to the white screen making the click click sound.

Folder with the ? just popped up.


NICE!!!!!!!
 
Sounds like a failed hard drive. Because it's clicking, you can't fix it with software as it's mechanical failure. Contact Apple and get a replacement as it's only 4 days old
 
It booted once from the HDD.
Got it to restart from DVD.
Disk Util does not see the HDD.
Guess really can't blame Apple for this. They don't make HDD.
But I am still pissed!!!!

Going to have them ship me a new one. Don't want apple store playing with a 4 day old computer.
 
ncfuser it's nice to see someone not blaming Apple, however, I do believe Apple will cover this since it's the HDD they use. Unless I'm mistaken.

Did you have anything backed up?

Must be frustrating :( HDs usually fail within first days (manufacturing defect or smth like that) or after years of loyal service (all HDs have maximum amount you can overwrite data, when it fills, it fails).

Hopefully the replacement will be flawless

Apple has to. When you buy a computer from a manufacturer/store, they offer the warranty and repair service, not the manufacturer of certain component but if you buy a component, e.g. hard drive separately, the manufacturer offers the warranty, not the store (it can but they will just contact the manufacturer) or the manufacturer of the computer you put the disk in.

Most components have 3-year warranty when bought separately but when you buy a "packet-PC" the warranty is usually 1-year like Apple's and there is no manufacturer warranty anymore. That's why many people likes to build their PCs themselves as it's cheaper and you get longer warranty

I got Time Machine set up the 1st night. So I have everything backed:)
Never restored from a TM backup before. Hope that goes ok.
I love Apple products, but man all the Apple haters at work are going to give it me this morning, after a Monday of me telling them all how bad a$$ this thing was:rolleyes:

Now I must wait until 9am:mad:

Good news on the backup
And yes, restoring from TM should be a painless process

I know it is frustrating, but hopefully you will be up and running again soon

Migrating from a TM backup is VERY easy and painless. I did a clean install of 10.6 when it came and migrated from TM backup and EVERYTHING was EXACTLY the same as they were before, even all settings in all apps.
 
My HDD failed in my i7 too. It was a 1TB Seagate. I now have a 2TB Hitachi, which I hope isn't related to the past problems associated with Hitachi Deathstar drives.

Which HDD was it -- the 1TB or 2TB?

I'm buying my i7 iMac today online and I'm curious which one I should get. I've always had terrible luck with Hitachi drives. What do you guys think? Is it worth the upgrade? Or just do it later down the line.
 
Same thing happened to my Mini when I got it. Harddrive died after 4 days. I walked in, they asked me if I had my stuff backed up, I said yes, the guy walked into the back and came out with a brand new in box mini and gave it to me. I was in there for about 15min.

O Well.
Apple is making the replacement now. Its on rush. Old one already with FedEx.
I am hoping for a Friday/Saturday delivery, but not holding my breath.
This one had a good screen, and everything else seemed ok.
Hope I don't get a new one with more problems.

I would have seriously just had mine repaired. It takes about 20 minutes for an Apple tech to swap out the hard drive, and then you wouldn't have to worry about having any different issues.

It can take up to days, even weeks if they are fully booked.
 
Got my week 10 replacement yesterday.
Restored from TM last night. Only issue after was with Cisco VPN, reinstall fixed that.
Again, I don't see any yellow. If I move my head at different viewing angles, it looks a little darker, but not yellow. No dead pixels in screen or iSight. HDD sounds fine. I can hear it only when writing to it when there is no other sound in the house.
Did the little fix to make it boot quicker by re-selecting the HDD for the bootup disk. Boots in like 15 -20 secs now.

So I got another good one. Lets hope this HDD doesn't fail.
