I bought the new 12'' ibook last week and I must say its a great machine. Today I noticed that every 10seconds or so, I here a humming noise that lasts for less than a second and goes away. My harddrive also seemed to click when this noise appears. I was wondering if this is normal or not.

Not cool. Generally a clicking hard drive means it's failing, but this is a new iBook so surely it can't be dead already. Nevertheless, make sure you have everything backed up safely.
Then go into Disk Utility (in the Utilities folder) and right click on your hard drive to get the Information list and make sure that S.M.A.R.T. status is verified.
How prominent is the clicking and how often does this happen? Is it every 10 seconds?

i just noticed that when i let the ibook sit there by itself it doesn't make any noise. The second I began surfing again or even scrolling up and down in the same page (even when i typed or moved the mouse) the humming+clicking happened. right now it seemed to be more around 5 seconds but it doesn't happen ALL the time. Just randomly for a short period of time it seems. Could it be due to the widgets?
I doubt it's widget-related. What is your S.M.A.R.T. status?
Also, could it be a third party app that's just playing feedback sounds when you use the mouse? Have you installed anything to change the theme/appearance of your Mac?

Could be that the computer is processing the tasks. Mine does this on occasion as well. Even for simple tasks, try opening an app especially a large app and it makes the same noise but for a longer period.
I would not be to concerned unless it happens alot, like every click, mine does it every while too. From opening a new window, dashboard when not used for a while etc. I believe it is because the hd spins up to save ram for a task that has not been used for a while.
