Hey guys,
The development of my app (ClickWheel) is nearly complete.

I set out to recreate the experience of using an iPod with a clickwheel on the iPhone and iPod Touch and I am very excited to see it nearly complete.

The app isn't meant to replace the current iPod app, as it is far easier to use, this is for the 90% of the iPhone market who bought an iPhone after having owned an iPod and still enjoy the nostalgic feeling when using one.

Here is a teaser video I created:

Please visit the website and follow on twitter:

PS. This is my first app so please use the kind side of your heart ;)

While I enjoy the nostalgic feeling, the first iPod owned was not the 4th or 5th gen for me. Can you repeat the 3rd gen look and feel? ;)

It's novelty and offers no additional functionality but it looks cute and looks like it works well for the intended purpose. I hope it is free so I can try, otherwise I'd like not to spend money on making my iPhone go back a few gens in time.

I am hoping to add more themes (different iPods) later on.
I will be giving away promo codes soon, I will PM you one if you want. It will be priced at $1 (£0.59)

That looks awesome. I'm assuming it actually uses music on your iPhone or iPod touch, yeah?

If so, I'll buy it on launch day.

Man this looks AWESOME!

I remember when the rumors floated around about the iPhone back in 2005 and 06 there were mockups people made that showed the click wheel I thought it was the coolest way to use the device. Apple showed us that wasn't the case. But it will be awesome to see and use once you release it.

It actually looks almost compelling enough to pay for... I wish I could spend more on entertainment apps. But if you completed the experience by simulating EVERY iPod, including the shuffle and the new accelerometer nanos w/games included, I would pay. Just saying.

Good luck!
Nate

I have been waiting for an app like this for a while as i do miss my wheel...

My first ipod was a 3rd Gen... i loved it.

Unfortunately i am a little disappointed by this app....

I think that the way that you have tried to isolate the ipod within the touch screen makes it too small... you have the opportunity to use the full width of the screen for the 'internal' sreen and 'internal' click wheel....

Is it too late for you to redesign?

I dont want this to sound like I am criticising, only trying t be constructive....

Are the dimensions the exact same as the ipod you are emulating....??

I did consider the idea but it iphone proportions a quite different to that of an ipod, where as the screen of the iphone is nearly exactly the same.
This is why I decided it would be safer to use the exact proportions of the the iPod 5th gen inside the screen.
Who knows, I am hoping to design new themes for all ipods! (this could include the moderations you outlined)

I was actually going to do the same thing when I finished my current project! Very nice implimentation.

haha you just wasted a truckload of time because there's no chance in hell will this get approved by apple

It'll be interesting to see if Apple approves this app or decides to reject for either a) duplicating existing functionality, or b) infringing on Apple's trademarks. I really hope they approve it though.

It will be both, I wish developers would actually read their guidelines

I was trying to find the words to say the same thing even if a bit more friendly

Even if you have not used the Apple logo they probably have a copyright on the clickwheel, so I'm sorry but I don't think you'll pass the review system.

That said the app seems very nice and I was thinking to make the same thing a couple months ago.

Good Luck !

I was thinking the same thing.
Hopefully by the time I have submitted it, the FCC would have sorted out the rejection policies!
Regards the clickwheel, the patent only extends to hardware, not virtual emulation.

You are not allowed to have any products showing in your app (the images of iphone, ipods, macs etc are banned immediately). Again, read your agreements and guidelines before coding.

It will be rejected.

I remember reading a similar story here on MacRumors. It was Rowmote.

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/643579/

http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=315316036&mt=8

Rowmote was forced to change the GUI for the same reason your app will be rejected, it looked just like the $15 remote that ships with Macs & Apple TV. The developer had to change the look to be more like a plus sign. Reviewers complained because the screenshots still showed the Apple look and feel.

Sorry. Better to change it now to be subtly different.

I can see where you are coming from but I can't see how I could change the design that would still keep the authenticity of the app.

Also, somebody said you can submit apps to cydia, but for the life of me I don't know how, could you share?
