Since iOS 17/new iPhone 15 Pro Max, the clock alarm sound only plays briefly.

Fortunately, I usually don't have to be anywhere, and tend to wake up around that time naturally, but it's been going on long enough now to be really annoying.

When I do wake up, to no sound playing, I look at the screen and the alarm is there on the lock screen. Totally silent.

I did a Google search, and lots of identical advice to turn off Settings > Face ID & Attention > Attention Aware Features

Well, that's stupid, because that's a plural. So now you are turning off ALL attention-aware features. But OK I tried it. But that doesn't help.

(Aside: I wish Apple would be more careful with the wording on Settings, so that it's absolutely clear whether you are turning a feature ON or OFF. Many of the prompts are clear as mud.)

I did an experiment and set a new alarm for 2 minutes from now. (To be clear, not a timer: an alarm-clock alarm.) Probably didn't do the most accurate simulation though. Put the phone on my dining room table. Shut off the lights, went into the kitchen.

I hear the alarm sound. Walk into the dining room. Nowhere near the iPhone and not within range of FaceID for sure. The alarm sound stopped.

My theory is that if I so much as roll-over in bed the alarm sound will stop.

I have an additional theory: Tim can go into work any time he wants! ;)

Watch alarm is also inconsistent. But I also upgraded from Watch 6 to Pro 2.

So damn many permissions to acknowledge now when you get a new device, maybe something to do with that?

Other issue I've been having is that the phone gets stuck on Sleep focus, and so I miss phone calls. I have to remember every morning to make sure it's out of Sleep Focus. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't.

----

At this point, if I can't find a fix, now I need advice on a third-party alarm-clock app. Which is something that should be absolutely unnecessary on an iPhone! And, of course, if a third-party app ties-in to alarm APIs and settings, it may not even solve the problem.

I'm really happy to see this post because that means it's not only me!

I was just barely woken up this morning by the first *note* of my alarm. I was like.. "why isn't my alarm sounding?" and I looked over at my phone (15PM, iOS 17.1) on its magsafe charger and it was showing the alarm with the snooze and stop buttons but was playing at an extremely low volume.

I panicked thinking I'd overslept but I hadn't. But I easily could have.

I did some googling and found what you found about turning off attention aware features. Thinking I don't really need this feature, I turned it off, satisfied it would probably fix my issue for tomorrow. But now I see your post claiming this doesn't fix it.

So I guess the questions are:

- Did we have the SAME problem or slightly different ones? You said it affects normal clock alarms; I use the Bedtime alarm.
- Has anyone else had this happen, and is there a solid fix?
- You said it's been going on for a while. How long? Since you got your new phone?

I really don't want to have to break out my vintage 1980s clock radio in my closet as a backup alarm. :/

To clarify, I do mean a bedtime/wakeup alarm. NOT a clock alarm, like I'm timing an egg. (I don't use iPhone for that. I have a Google Nest Display. I like that it clucks for eggs - or at least chicken - and perks for coffee...)

It's been going on since I got the new phone, 15 Pro Max.

I don't remember if it was happening with my iPhone 12 Pro Max that I briefly updated to 17.0 before getting the new phone and turning it in for rebate.

I now have the latest 17.1, and it didn't fix it.

But now voice text is broken in apps, including Safari.

Thanks, Apple.

Ima see if I can find a vintage Big Ben...
