I've got the 'recent opened apps' in dock turned off, and so it stopped showing anything other than what's in dock, until today....

I've not updated since 12.0, and now on the end of the dock Gmail keeps appearing with the clock icon on it. I've unticked just about anything and everything I can lay my hands on in Settings, and it won't go away. Siri suggestions and Siri off, all the obvious ones, OFF, but nothing gets rid

First question is WHY is it there, and why can't I get rid of it, and the second question is why has it only happened today, weeks and weeks after I've updated iOS?

The clock icon indicates that you frequently use that app at the current time. It probably took a while after you updated the OS before it started appearing because it was still learning your habits.

I believe that if you go to settings|general|multitasking & dock and turn off “show suggested and recent apps” that will get rid of it.

Thanks for your reply, I've had that switched off after the first time I saw it, and it will not go away. That's what I don't understand. It makes no difference at all. Gets on my nerves, because my fingers are used to using the dock as is, and that moves the icons over all the time.
