So torn right now. Can't decide whether I should return my wifi. I have come to the conclusion that I really need my ipad in places that do not have free wifi.

I'm pRobably getting some form of mobile broadband in the near future but I'm waiting for the new iPhone announcment to decide which provider.

130 extra dollars and two weeks sans ipad is a tough pill to swallow but alas.

How many people have returned theirs and decided to get the 3g.

I ordered the 3G and I'm waiting for it. As much as I want an iPad right NOW, I think the wait will be worth it. I think that if you feel you need 3G access, you'll regret not making the switch. Being without an iPad for a week or two is a small price to pay. You had your fun for 2 weeks, so you got 2 extra weeks of iPad usage than many of us!

Wouldn't you rather to carry only an iPad than an iPad + a mobile broadband hotspot type of thing?

How about keeping it for now and selling it on ebay when the 3G arrives?

Why return??
Sell it on ebay for profit. I sold my opened 16gb for 100 more than retail price... and the sealed units for a lot more  Reap $$

Keep it. Do you really want to give AT&T more money for spotty 3G coverage?

I don't want to but most other options are more expensive. If you don't use it some months then you save but how I have been justifying it to myself is breaking it down like this.

1. Sprint overdrive $60 per month

2. Mifi $60 per month

3. iPhone and ipad data $60 per month any months that I don't use the ipad will be a net savings. I travel extensively but only for 2-3 months a year. The rest of the time I'm in a very wifi rich area.

Wish I still had my jailbreak. I would just go with mywi.

Or you could sell it on Craigslist for fast cash. Carefully weigh your decision but it sounds like you would greatly benefit from a 3G iPad.

I'm waiting for the 3G, as much as i want to start enjoying the iPad.

I'm a huge believer in "better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it"

If the 3G iPad was tied to a contract deal thru AT&T, then i would get the wifi model, but since its pay as you go, in my eyes, you cant lose with the 3G model.

I am in the same position and while I don't want to eat restocking fees, I think there will be days when I regret not having 3G.

I have a jailbroken iPhone with mywi which is great, but honestly, I'm not sure when AT&T will clamp down on this.

I checked eBay and it seems that they are going for enough of a margin to cover fees. Hope that whichever guy in the uk wins the auction enjoys his new ipad

There is WiFi pretty much everywhere I go...The only time i've been missing the 3G was when I was in the car. I'm still hoping that AT&T will eventually allow tethering of some kind, and hopefully it will be cheaper than a MiFi or Overdrive.

If they don't the Sprint Overdrive sounds better every day...My city has 4G coverage and I would be able to use it with my new MBP when I get one. Unfortunatly though I still have a year on my AT&T contract so I won't be changing much now.

I do not have wifi everywhere I go but I have my iPhone. The use of tethering will tell me if the 3G is for me. With that then I'd sell this one to cover as much of the cost as possible and move to the 3G one. Today I cannot see giving another damn dime to AT&T. I'm actually considering going to the Droid on Verizon, I'm out of contract with AT&T so why not?

One thing to consider is that not only does the 3G version of the iPad have 3G, it also has GPS. The GPS chip should have been included in the WiFi only iPad as well, in my opinion.

I'm not happy about having to pay another $30 per month to AT&T, or any other carrier, to include 3G service. Since I have an iPhone, you would think we could just tether it to the iPad instead. Most people that will be carrying an iPad will be carrying an iPhone or other cell phone. So tethering makes more sense than paying for two 3G service plans. I am getting sick of having to buy service for each device. Those monthly bills can add up quick.

I was in the same boat as you. I shipped my ipad back to apple yesterday. I didn't pay a restocking fee. Basically i had a 2 week Rental of the iPad.

I actually travel a lot. Outside of the country mostly, and while I have been doing decent with finding wifi positions, there have been a few times when finding wifi was tough. I wont be paying every month for 3g access, but i figured i would be disappointed if i need it, and i didn't get the 3G version when I had a chance.

I'm thinking the exact same.
I'm waiting on the new iPhone and 4.0. If I'm not impressed I'm heading over to the droid or something that allows tethering.

.

Save a lot of money on mobile BB equipment and service. Return it. There is not a better deal for mobile BB than the ATT deal with the iPad.

how much are people paying to tether on VZW?

My master plan is to be back in the safe arms of big red. I'm going to wait until LTE is built out in About two years at which point I'm ditching my ISP and cable company. If I were to go back now then I may qualify for early upgrade on some lte compatible gear next year.

Hmmm

+1, no doubt - but to each his own. I will say the math speaks for itself. Anyone looking to do the mobile hotspot thing will be looking at an outlay of plus/minus $2k over 2 years - not including taxes and fees - and that includes the price of the 16GB Wi-Fi iPad  [provided you didn't have a mobile hotspot already]

3G, FTW - prepay/cancel anytime/no commitment = no brainer. The dollars make sense here. 'Nuff said :D
