I'm drop shipping my 27" imac refurb to OWC for them to install the ssd, ram, etc. Someone here said OWC will clone the hd to the ssd and then the end user went back and did a clean install. Wouldn't it be better if OWC just installed the SSD, left it clean, and I did the install from the disks myself? I mean I assume it's a time issue why they would clone, not fresh install. I have plenty of time to do it. Is it not that simple? Is there something more fangled to it, or is it just running the disks and doing what they say?

You want the SSD to write zeros across all sectors. In theory, the number of times SSD can restored is finite before slowing the performance.
I personally would manually backup and restore iPhoto, Documents, download Applications from the web. All the while have a clone in case you missed something in the backup.

Ok, I'll keep asking them. Right now I'm communicating with OWC via email, and they keep skirting the issue. Or rather, they keep answering everything but my direct question of whether they will clone or do a fresh install.
So if I tell them to leave it ALONE, then is there any difficulty in installing it myself? I don't mean to sound stupid here, but is everything on *1* cd? No tricks, mirrors, little things you need to know? If I just pop it in and follow instructions, it will work?
I don't totally see how they can send me the computer WITHOUT installing the OS, because they can't really tell if their work is correct and all the parts in working order, can they? I guess that's why I wasn't sure if I should press it, because I didn't know if I was messing with their methodology.

Just to end the curiousity, OWC wrote back and said if the disks are with my computer, they'll do a clean install. So that takes care of that!
