I have the following

Late 2012 27-inch iMac Core i7
OS X Yosemite 10.10.3
4TB WD MyBook USB 3 External Hard Drive

How do I clone the Macintosh HD of my iMac and create a bootable copy onto the 4TB external drive?

Only thing I know to do is a Time Machine backup.

You can use Disk Utility or Carbon Copy Cloner to do this. First, in Disk Utility, make sure to create a new partition on the external drive, and that the Partition Map Scheme is set to GUID Partition Table so you can boot off it. Then, to clone using Disk Utility, click the Restore tab with your Macintosh HD partition selected, drag the partition you created on your external into "Destination", and click Restore.

Carbon Copy Cloner is my #1 choise for making bootable clones on a eSATA external RAID1 HDD from my 10.10.2 SSD. While doing so - on a hourly base - it will save ALL CHANGED files in seperate (date&time stamped) Folders on the external drive(s). This may come in handy for restoring e.g. individual working files!

Give the trial version of Carbon Copy Cloner @ http://bombich.com a shot, to see if it may meet your needs and likings!

Cheers

This procedure is so easy, that AFTER you do it, you will think to yourself, "why did I start a topic about this?"

What to do:
Download CarbonCopyCloner from here:
http://www.bombich.com/download.html
CCC is FREE to download, and it is FREE to use for the first 30 days.

You can also use SuperDuper (SD will do a "full clone" of one drive to another for free, forever, without registering).

Launch CCC.

Pick your source drive (internal) on the left.
Pick your target drive (external) on the right.

Let CCC do its thing.

Done.
