Heyas,

I'm wodnering what this 'clonking' noise that's coming from my MBP 17", and where is it coming from exactly?

I have a feeling it's sorta coming from the speaker area, left speaker.. sorta mid-top.

it sounded like a mix of boing and clonk. like.. "Tch-Plong" I hope it isn't the harddrive head :/

Hmm, may need a sound clip to be of any use to you...

Maybe someone else has some ideas...

Mute your volume for a while and see if it pops up again. Alternatively, plug in headphones or external speakers and see whether the problem carries through. :)

Its kind of funny how difficult it is to spell noises.

Give us some more info if muting the volume doesn't help. How often does it happen? How loud is it? Does it happen more often if you're moving the machine?

heyas,

the speakers are off. Well, it isn't that loud, but it's noticeable when you actually in a quite room. it isn't the whine, it's a tad bit louder than the whine, and it comes on, only every so often. every 3-5 mins interval.

it isn't the usual hard drive cricking noise (when a harddrive "thinks", or read/write).

Hmm... it's hard to record, and it isn't like it's constant. Bleh... :(

That's okay I suppose, thanks for the attempt! This is time to put applecare into a test :p

That sounds like a hard drive to me, better get ready with a back up plan.

My 15" is doing the same thing...and it sounds like the hard drive to me. Luckly, my replacement machine should be here today (for an unrelated problem), so I shouldn't have to worry...we'll see I guess.
