Close a window in safari, it quits?

I have this problem with one of my old G4s, when i'm in Safari i either close a window or a tab and Safari quits EVERY TIME. Is this just a speed problem, because it only has a 400mhz processor

The CPU speed should have no impact on this. Does it shutdown cleanly or does Safari crash?

Yup, you should definitely check the Console (in /Applications/Utilities) to see if there's any indication what's going wrong, the next time you close a Safari window.
