Closed Captioning

So this may be an easy fix, but I'll ask anyway. I have my mother visiting over the holidays and she is hard of hearing and needs closed captioning to really enjoy TV. How can I add this to my movies in iTunes? Most of my movies are ripped via RipIt and encoded via handbrake. Is there an easy way to add captions that won't always be there? Or is it easier to just get the disc out of storage?

The captions on the disc are usually graphics overlays not text embedded in the video stream which the "usual"/broadcast captions use. It can be done, but is usually more work than it is worth.

It is easier to get the discs out of storage, or you could look for the subtitles via www.opensubtitles.org, but I don't know how to implement external subtitles to videos on an Apple TV.
When you transcoded the ripped video DVDs via HandBrake, you obviously left the Subtitles tab as it is and did not include the subtitles.

Plex can automatically download and display subtitles while playing movies, but setting it up may take longer than pulling out your DVDs.

So if I were to encode via handbrake and include subtitles, I'd have to have a separate file with subtitles, and one without is that correct? No way to just toggle it on and off like on a DVD.

You can't add the vobsubs that you see most commonly (well, you can add them, but they won't work on the aTV2 without burning them in), but you can add subtitles that are listed as Closed Captions, and they will work properly on the aTV2.

hi it is pretty simple on handbrake. you can toggle on/off CC as subtitle in ATV 2.
On your ATV 2 make sure enable subtitle.
When you ripping your dvd collection make sure you check for symbol "CC"
after you check dvd box for CC interest handbrake. Click Subtitle drop menu
choose last number 6-Closed Caption - (Text)
If DVD collection don't have symbol "CC" then you can choose
1 - English vobsub. This subtitle will be burned on screen you can't toggle on/off
If you prefer real closed caption you can look at elgato Turbo.264 HD
it does closed captioning. It is not freeware
