CLOSING Mac Pro DVD drive in Windows

Okay, so I've just set up Windows on my Mac Pro to give it a look around. And ugh, if it isn't ugly and less efficient to use... but that's not the point of my post.

I've look all around Windows - and I don't think I'm a dumb Windows user, I did use it up until 2004 - but I cannot, for the life of me, find an option to CLOSE my drive. I can eject it from My Computer. I can eject it on keyboard. But actually closing it? No option to be seen.

It may not seem a big deal, but I'd rather not have to push my drive closed every time I use it under Windows. I won't use it a lot, but I'm sure some people will - anybody know a way?

Do a search for CD Eject Tool for windows. It will give you tray icons for your dvd drive(s).

If it's ejecting via the keyboard it looks like the Apple Keyboard Support application is working. I don't know why it's not closing the drive. Then again I remember tapping the drive in on countless machines for years without one complaint.

The apple util only opens the drive and doesnt close it. and it also doesnt handle the second drive as well either. Thats why I use CD Eject Tool because it will open and close as many drives as you have

I've never used the CD Eject Tool before. (I googled it.)

It's interesting if you have multiple drives.

I use it simply because I do not like pushing the drive door to close it.

I bought 3rd party drivers for Windows called AppleK Pro that let one control the drive closing (and opening) from the keyboard. AppleK Pro also lets you use the usual Apple keyboard shortcuts in Windows.

I just use the pre-installed Apple Keyboard Support in Boot Camp 1.1.

I don't get what the big deal is about no being able to close the drive from the keyboard. I guess it's a convenience... but how often do you have to open and close the drive that you need a button to do it? How hard is it to reach down.. or up... and tap on the drive door to close it? How do you close the door to your house when you leave? Do you complain about having to do that too?

To me it's simple.... almost intuitive. I wouldn't ever install software to fix something that isn't broken. I guess if you were opening and closing the CD tray more than a dozen times a day... you might want to close it with a button push. Otherwise, what's the big deal if you have to do it manually? Guess people are just lazy.

The difference is your house door does not have either belts or gears that need to be properly aligned to keep the mechanism working properly. CD/DVD rom drives are not meant to be pushed on to open or close them. That is why the button on the front of the drive opens and closes the drive not just opens it. I dont mean to sound harsh but as the owner of many dvd / cd drives as well as high end audio cd / dvd players I have experience in this catagory.

It's not about being lazy, it's about not damaging your drive. Think it through...

As far as I know, the Apple Keyboard Support only opens the drive, it doesn't close it. Will it close the drive (using the drive key)?

I just push my desktop's drives in, it doesn't hurt them [unless you shove it].
