I was on the edje of getting the ΜacPro until a rumor came out regarding Clovetown. Im a graphic designer using dtp apps like Adobe CS2, Quark etc.
My question is: is Clovertown expected to any better in those apps, or should i get the 2 dual quad Xeon MacPro thats around at the moment?

I doubt Apple will be releasing Octo-Core Macs at the same price point of $2499. They will most likely be an upgrade and start around $3299.

I could be wrong, but that is what I am expecting.

Octo-Core probably won't help you much in the current apps, especially since CS isn't a UB yet. If you are a big multi-tasker. And I mean multiple pro apps at once. CS, Aperture, and whatever else. Then yeah, wait for the Octo. Remember, it may start at a higher price point, and you should expect that to be the case.

Exactly. The 5300 series are expensive chips- the 2.33GHz model is officially priced the same as the 3GHz Woodcrest in the top end Mac Pro. the 2.66GHz model is several hundred $ more expensive.

And even if you are a multitasker, the benefits of a octo might be marginal.

Even if you would run exports on Aperture/Lightroom at the same time as you photoshop, you are fine even now with a Quad 3.0.

And there is not that much more you can do simultaneously in DTP surroundings!?

The benefits will be much higher in video surroundings, where you can decode, compress, render and edit (or whatever) at the same time.
Or in audio where you can leave applications to do some crunching in the background while you fiddle with other stuff.
Generally in the audio/video genre the processes are longer (tens of minutes or hours) so you have actually time to do some multi-stuff.

In photo, exporting 4 separte batches of 50 images each from Raw to 72mb 16 bit Tiffs takes only few minutes, rest of the time the machine is idle in that area.

The human factor starts to get in the way of productivity here...
:D

Yes, Apple can see major big $ profit margins can be made there.

Expect the Quads to remain at the same price point with an Octo available as a BTO option for considerable $ more.

Exactly. For some reason a lot of people are convinced otherwise. The Octo will be a premium product and thus will have a higher price than the Quad.

At least that is what makes sense. Maybe Apple will surprise like they did on the Mac Pro price. But who knows.

I highly Doubt Apple will release Mac Pro with Clovertown's on Nov 14
They tend to wait things out. look how long it took to update the Macbook pro for Core 2 Duo

But clovertown isnt a replacement cpu like core2duo was, i think clovertown will just be more like a high end MacPro, so why not let it out in the open and make more options, at the same time i hope for price drops for the dual xeon duo cores :D :D :D
