OSX have since long been plagued by inconsistency with their green toolbar button. And although savvy users like us MR members may be fine with it, or have even downloaded e.g. RightZoom to take care of the problem, it always saddens me as an  enthusiast when I try to explain the button to new users and they get totally confused when trying it out in different apps (has the button in Safari pre-Yosemite ever worked - for anyone?).
But oh boy was I relieved when I read that Yosemite will finally take care of the problem, where now the button will just make the app go full screen in a new Space.

So I try it out now in TextEdit, a text edit by Apple and should therefore of course comply with the new user guide lines, and it just maximises the window...

How hard can it be to be consistent?? Besides, it makes no sense at all why this application would be "blacklisted" to inheret this new feature, I'd love to write in TextEdit with no window distraction at all.

TextEdit maximizes just fine for me. Or are you referring to the fact that it doesn't seem to get its own space?

I agree that Apple's idea of maximize wasn't what most people expected prior to Yosemite. It was more like "maximize until reaching the vertical limit of the screen then stop".

Also, just out of curiosity, why are you still using TextEdit? Isn't Pages free now? I use TextEdit myself sometimes but have been wondering if anyone else still used it.

Pages is free for new Macs yes. And I do use it for stuff that will be printed. But I think we all sometimes prefer a minimalistic .txt file that can be opened on all computers on earth.
