I believe the Intel Xeon E5345 SLAEJ Quad Core 2.33GHz 8MB 1333MHz Socket 771 Processor will work in the cMP 1,1. I've read up on some threads here, and do I need to worry about two of these pulls being from different machines? It makes sense to me that as long as they match the chip spec, any revisions or anything shouldn't matter.

Should I pull the trigger on a pair of these from Amazon? Do I only need to upgrade to the 2,1 firmware only to have the CPU properly identified by the system?

Same stepping is OK, even if they're from different machines. However, why not go full monty for an X5355 or X5356 and use some much more exotic (not to mention - never fitted to a Mac Pro) processors instead is beyond me, pricewise they're all peantus anyway. Remember to flash the computer to 2,1 beforehand (and you are going to need Snow Leopard to do this).

The E5345s are based partially on price point. ($18 each versus 45 - 60 each on the 5355s) I need the additional cores more than speed. I figured the E5345s are good enough for me, and the lower TDP looks better, especially with the RAM running so hot.
