The mac starts up, shimes then sartupscreen shows, slightly distorted with horizontal streaks. Startup goes halfway, vetilator stops and screen goes dark: no signal. The fan of the videocard still works. I tried to re-seat the GPU, but to no avail.

I unplugged all periferics.
Did pram reset, etc.
Tried startup in safe mode, even that doesn't work.

Will it boot to recovery partition or any installer media? MacOS, Windows, Linux boot disc, etc?

If it won't, sounds like card has gone bad.

If it will, something's wrong with your Mac OS installation.

I like tsialex's suggestion too.

I have no PC.
Will try with other GPU, should have the previous one somewhere. Thks.

I tried all of it: from external startup, CD, safe mode, recovery: all the same. Have no MS soft (buêrk!).
Startup freezes halfway, cMP fans stop spinning, signal loss.

My 7970 just did the same thing last week. I put the HD5870 back in and order an RX580. 3 more days until arrival.

Not sure if that GPU works in a 3.1 though...
HD 5870 works with Sierra and previous macOS, the SSE4.2 driver problem blocks from working in HighSierra/Mojave.

I don't know if the RX580 works without SSE4.2 in Sierra, but definitively not with HighSierra/Mojave.

The 5870 actually does work in an already installed Mojave. It just doesn't work fully or even very well.

Everything works and it's not especially slow, but you lose transparency in the interface, and the fans run at full speed.

Otherwise, it'll get you by until you get a proper card. This Thursday for me... ;)

You forgot the Mac Pro 2008 Xeon, works with MP5,1 but not with the MP3,1 that the OP has.

No, I was just saying for my MP51 it works. I didn't really know about the older models. TBH, it doesn't work well at all after about 30 min. use. The interface becomes very sluggish when doing things like trying to open launchpad. I suppose that's because it relies heavily on transparency features .

Between that and the vacuum cleaner sounding fans, and ugly interface, I won't launch Mojave again until the new RX580 arrives.

I feel for the OP losing his favorite card. It seems a lot of folks are having HD79xx cards dying lately.
