Hi All!

cMP 4.1 flashed to 5.1 with x5680 was working fine for half a year.
One day it didn't wake up from sleep and was powered off. Then once more.
After poweroff it booted from 3rd switch on. Gone to sleep. Afterwards was found stuck on loading OS.
Powered off. Powered on from 5-7 try. I tried resetting PRAM which seems to worked from 5 try but didn't change anything.

Opened, cpu heatsink is hot.
Reinstalled old stock CPU w3520 - working fine.
Reinstalled x5680 - no boot.
Reinstalled back w3520 - working.

Bought new x5680, installed - no boot, no sound, black screen. Same behaviour.
Checked diag lights - no efi done light.

Set back w3520.

How this can be?

Northbridge clips are fine.

Supposed I burned cpu, but now i'am not sure.

Looks like SMC doesn't control fans in flashed macs at all.
Installed macsfancontrol.

Hi

To get some adequate help , the reader needs more information.
You could add a Signature or simply make a detailed list of all hardware ,BootRom version and the OS version .

Since you already installed MacsFanControl , a screenshot of MFC with all fans on auto and running at idle could be helpful too.

Hi KeesMacPro!

MP51.0089.B00 with HighSierra
GT120 video, 4 hdds. No ssd.

MacsFanControl was set to manual rpm, mainly to follow cpu diode temperature.
No effect in auto mode. I tried playing 4k video "Scotland" on youtube to make load - there were no reaction.

About stuck on load. I have a guess. 1 of hdd raid1 pair had failed.
It was 2 ST2000DM001. I wonder why they didn't broke earlier - worked several years.
May be 1 drive get stuck on iowait during OS load and smc ignored heat.

What I understand is that your MP still boots and works , but gets stuck loading a 4K video, correct?

For testing I would remove all disks except for the one with High Sierra , to eliminate possible failing disks as the cause.

You've mentioned the fans and the CPU Temp , so a screenshot of MFC with all fans on auto would be interesting.
A correctly working MP will manage the Temps fine with all fans controlled by the SMC= auto.

It boots with w3520 cpu and works. But fans doesn't increase speed with load (without macsfancontrol manually set).
It doesn't boot with x5680 cpu. No 'efi done' light when diag.

What makes you think the fans should increase speed under load?

As I wrote twice before, you could post a screenshot with all fans set to auto at idle (and under load if you wish).

Another recommendation ,as mentioned before , is a minimal configuration to start testing and troubleshooting.
So only 1 known working disk with the OS , or even better a known working disk with a clean install of HS to start with.

Lets suppose I didn't tell anything about fans. It will remain for whom it may be important. Hope it can calm you.

Machine doesn't start even with zero disks. Certainly i've tried with 1.
