cMP 4k, 60hz?

Anyone successfully running a 4k monitor at 60hz, after putting a new gfx card in the classic Mac Pro? I have a 6-core Westmere and I don't see any benefits in upgrading to the nMP except for 4K support at the moment. I have read that MacVidCards offer some gfx card solutions that supposedly supports 4K displays at 60hz.

Also, if anyone runs this, will the card only be able to run one display at a time? I would like to get a 4K monitor for my main desktop and still be able to use a 1080p display for movie playback at the same time.

For SST 4k displays, its pretty easy - as long as it has displayport 1.2 (GTX 680, 660, and maybe some of the other 6 series, pretty much all the 7 series and beyond) you're good to go. For MST displays, driver hacking involved.

ATI 7950 and related cards used to work as well, though I no longer have an ATI card, so not sure about current OS.

I use a Samsung U28D590 + generic 27" 1440p at home (cMP w/ GTX680, soon to swap for GTX970). Also using a Seiki SM40UNP + generic 21", 1080p at work, hooked to a Quadro K600. Seen others using multiple 4K displays, though you'll need a card with multiple displayport 1.2's.

So nMP really has no advantage for this.

Thanks for your replies guys! I am leaning towards a GTX 760 card since it's pretty inexpensive - however it is "sold out" at MacVidCards, which seems strange. I can find heaps of GTX 760 cards for sale everywhere. Obviously I will need a Mac flashed one and I want to keep the boot screen working also, so this seems to be the only place to buy such a card at the moment.

Anyway, it seems like a go, now I just need to decide on a screeen and find the card - maybe write MVC and ask if they are getting it in stock again soon:)

My 7950 runs a 4K + 1080p monitor with no issues under Mavericks or Yosemite.
 
I have a MacVidCards GTX 680 4GB card in a 5,1 12 core Mac Pro and it is currently running a 4K Dell P2715Q (3840 x 2160) in Retina mode at 60Hz and a Dell U2713HM (2560 x 1440) display. It is working great for me... :cool:

Yes I know, but a bit silly having to buy a card here in Denmark, ship it to the US and then get it back. Shipping costs will be quite high...

Awesome, thanks! Any concerns about the power consumption of the gfx card? I read about some people buying an extra external power supply for it. I am definitely not going to do that if it is neccessary... I wont be doing anything GPU intense on the machine anyway.

BTW on MacVidCards it says GTX 680 only runs 30hz but I guess thats a mistake.
 
We only had an Asus MST 4K display until recently. Kepler cards only run 60Hz on those with a driver hack, and that hacks isn't always stable.

The fact is, we need to update each product page to include info for the Asus PQ321 and the Dell 5K in 4K SST mode as both of those "4k 60Hz" outputs are completely different.

Frustrating thing about 4K is I would rather err on the side of saying things don't work then make a statement that something does work and generalise too much.

We can't afford to buy one of each new display so to some extent everyone needs to read and search forums using the model of display they are considering. From what I have discovered 4K 60hz support also changes depending on running a firmware update on the display.

No issues with power supply and my Mac Pro is pretty well loaded with drives and SSDs plus upgraded to dual 3.33 GHz 6-core. With the newer Dell 4K display, it is running 60Hz via the DisplayPort connection.

not that much true, flashed radeons have some bugs with 4k. unflashed is much better but no bootscreen.
