I have read all the FAQ on here to upgrade my 2010 5,1 cMP from HS to Mojave (and onward hopefully) but I have a few simple questions. Cost isn't really an issue in relation to the card but I would like to do it as easy / simply as possible so of the apple supported cards -

  • MSI Gaming Radeon RX 560 128-bit 4GB GDDR5
  • SAPPHIRE Radeon PULSE RX 580 8GB GDDR5
  • SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 7950 Mac Edition
  • NVIDIA Quadro K5000 for Mac
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 Mac Edition
Is the first one on that list the only plugnplay one as in I won't need to "mess" about with getting an extra power lead?

I did install an SSD in my dvd drive and install memory so I presume with the 560 it would be as easy as that.....Would I still be better getting a better card from that list anyway for future proofing or would that be overkill ? All this Mac does is run Ableton and occasional arcade emulation.

So as easy as this for the 580 ? -

Sapphire Pulse RX580 is my recommendation.
You just need a dual mini 6 pin to 8 pin cable.

Something like this ?

Would you say get a brand new 580 or an ebay one off a trusted/power seller ? I presume these are fairly bulletproof ?

That’s the cable yes.
Personally I would get new (but that’s my preference).
You never know if it’s been used for mining, which was why you couldn’t get one anywhere for about 6 months when released.

I did upgrade my 5.1 MP old gpu to the RX 580. Everything is working great and I can really use this computer again for video editing. I have the latest version of Mojave installed and I also did the hack to enable the usage of the hardware accelerators for video encoding/decoding that the 580 has. Now what worries me is that I didn't need any extra cables, so I wonder if I did something wrong.

Is there any point in keeping the old HD5770 or should I sell it on eBay for around 70 quid ?

Useful to keep, if that slim chance arises and you needed the boot screen.
It would probably cost you more to re-buy one if the need arises.

Fair point - i know its a little off topic here but where do you recommend UK wise to buy memory for a 2010 macPro - Megamac looks promising.....

One point in keeping it could be to have it available for the (rare) situations, in which you need the bootpicker / preboot scenario and (like me) for different reasons do not intend to mess with OpenCore.

Edit: Ah, just have seen this has been said before.

I just bought a load more RAM too (32GB) so presumably now as long as I follow the HowTo I can step through from HS to Mojave and then Catalina backing up all the way....actaully scrub that upgrade to Cat after reading this ...
