Hi, hope someone can shed some light on this one.

I recently bought a 5,1 locally on Ebay for £50 sold as not working but as it came with a working spare PSU I thought it was worth buying. As I plugged it in for the first time it powered up without pressing the power button but after shutting it down I noticed the light on the power button stayed on but it wouldn't boot up again. Pressing the power button did nothing, holding the power button down did nothing.

When I unplugged the power lead the light went out and when I plugged it in again the light came back on but it still wouldn't boot. After messing around for a while I removed the GPU, pressed the SMC button, plugged it in again and it booted up like before without pressing the power button. This is where I am stuck. I have tried everything:

Zapped the PRAM x4 times
Tried another PSU
Tried another GPU
Tried another back plane
Tried a another CPU tray with different RAM
Tried another power lead

Nothing works, any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Hi, thanks for the suggestion. I did test the battery and it confirmed 3v but will try another one tomorrow. Also going to try updating firmware with Mojave USB installer to 144 tomorrow

Hmmm...

Tried a new battery and same thing.

Tried to update the firmware with Mojave USB installer but when prompted from the installer to update the firmware by clicking on "Shut Down" nothing happens. It does let me shut down from the apple menu but again the power button light stays on and it won't reboot if i press it or hold it down.

In order to reboot I have to perform the following steps

  1. Turn power off at wall socket
  2. Unplug power lead
  3. Unseat GPU and press SMC button
  4. Reseat GPU
  5. Plug in power lead
  6. Turn on power switch at wall socket and it immediately powers up and boots normally
Forgot to mention I did also try another expansion panel (front USB & Jack) and another ribbon cable that connects it to the backplane.

One other thing to note is that it will restart normally from the apple menu

The only thing I can think of now is to try another power button.
