Seems I've fallen victim to a fairly common problem of damaging the IDE drive cable of my MacPro3,1.
Just finished the replacement with a cable from eBay, so I would strongly suggest to anyone to be very careful when removing-replacing the optical drive cage on your cMP.
At no time did I feel I was being rough or forcing this cage back in, yet I still managed to pinch and destroy several wires rendering the cable unusable.

been there did that with my MDD G4 when it was new I added a pioneer DVD burner hosed the cable Apple sent me a new one for free
 
you can also just harvest the spare eSATA ports for a newer drive ^^
