hi all... so here is my dilemma: i've want to make a catalog for printing in Photoshop and it will be in black&white... so my question is... what image mode should i use: Greyscale or CMYK??
and what and what type of colors should i use? are there some special swatches for working in Greyscale? sorry but i'm new to printing and all... any help would be much appreciated!

thanks in advanced!

File preparation will depend upon the output device. CMYK offset presses have one requirement. Multi-color (8+) inkjet printers have another. How do you plan to make a catalog? Do you mean something like a Picture Package? (Other programs are generally used for catalogs.)

If it's going to be printed in black ink only, then greyscale is what you want. As for the swatch... greyscale encompasses K 0-100%. Thats your scope for colour and it's really up to you what values you use. I would steer clear of really weak tints, say less than 10%, as these may not reproduce well.

However, you shouldn't be using an image editor like Photoshop to layout a catalogue. You should use that to prepare the images you want to use and tinker with their greyscale balance. You should compose the catalogue itself in either QuarkXpress, or preferably InDesign - the 2 industry leading page layout tools.

thanks for the reply yall!! i'm gonna use greyscale then and for the page composition i will use photoshop... as for the printing and layout related... that's not really my job... the printing company will do the layout in InDesign and the printing as well on a laser printer... so i don't have to worry about that...
so let see i got this right then... if i work in greyscale the printer will use olny black and if i work in CMYK the printer will use all the colors to make the black in my catalog even though i used only black and grey tones?

Depends.

If I were your printer I'd sample it down to greyscale and then charge an additional $300 set-up fee.

If I were you I'd try and save the $300 and downsample it yourself ;)

@7on... i dont get what you mean bro... i told you i was gonna make it in greyscale.. what more is there to downsample?? anyway the catalog is rather small... has only 7 pages and it's costing me about 5$
